Walkability in SW Raleigh

Spring 2020

THE BRIEF:

Identify a social or political issue and what community it affects, exploring how visually mapping the problem in context could:

  1. Expose a different interpretation of a space and its use

  2. Highlight or solve some aspect of the problem that a traditional map wouldn’t show

  3. Enhance the user’s awareness in the space or redirect their attention

PROJECT GOALS:

How can an interactive, crowdsourced map allow residents of SW Raleigh to self-identify sites for walkability improvements and share walkability data with their community?

Research + Discovery

Through anecdotal and first-hand experience data, my partner and I identified walkability in SW Raleigh as an issue that could benefit from a mapping intervention. We conducted research by walking around the neighborhood and collecting GIS data from the City of Raleigh databases.

Final Prototype

Using the insights generated, we created a prototype app design that allowed residents of SW Raleigh to generate new data for their community by tracking walking routes + safety.
